What is Nutripsychology?

Nutripsychology combines insights form the fields nutritional science and clinical psychology to help you shift the balance from using food to regulate negative emotions towards nourishing your brain and body.

Standard diet advice often falls short in tackling the root causes of emotional eating, especially in a world filled with highly processed foods. On the other hand, traditional psychotherapy tends to overlook the biological drivers of eating habits—many of which are influenced by the gut microbiome.

That’s why Nutripsychology approaches unwanted cravings and stress eating from both a biological and psychological perspective by guiding you to become an intentional eater in six* sessions through the use of nutritional psychiatry and psychotherapeutic skills coaching. Nutripsychology borrows skills from modalities that have good evidence for supporting people with disordered eating: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).

* Six is a minimum number of sessions required to start learning alternative ways to cope with stress. The total number of sessions will depend on how chronic your problem is and how much skills practice you can do outside of the sessions.  If needed, after the initial six-session block, you can have additional support on a pay-as-you-go basis at £75 per follow-up.

About me

Hi, I'm Anna. As someone who personally navigated disordered eating during my teenage years, I developed a strong desire to connect with and help others facing similar struggles. Becoming a Registered Nutritionist enabled me to work with individuals across the spectrum of eating difficulties: from severely undernourished to extremely overnourished.

However, it's the struggles of my colleagues—healthcare professionals on the brink of burnout— who felt ashamed of going against own advice and managing stress with food, that inspired me to develop a dedicated service that supports busy people to effectively cope with life difficulties.

Aside from Nutripsychology, I am pursuing career in Clinical Psychology by working as an Assistant Psychologist in NHS.

My Philosophy

I consider myself to be an adopter of a nuanced anti-diet approach: I do not view weight as a sole measure of health and agree that hyper-focus on appearance and "quick-fix" diets cause more damage than good for most people in the long term. However, I do not see the diet culture as being the sole cause for people's eating and weight problems. Instead, I believe a combination of factors is at play: our environment filled with processed foods (designed to override satiety signals through an optimal mix of sugar, fat, and salt), our biological predisposition to crave these foods and store them as energy, and our natural tendency to seek pleasure and escape negative emotions. I also accept that many people continue to have body composition goals for both aesthetic and health reasons, and should not feel guilty for wanting to pursue these goals. Therefore, my role is to support you with aligning your goals to your values and moving towards them using evidence-based, sustainable strategies.
